CATALOGUE OF MILITARY CEMETERIES

The release of the database of military graves abroad is one of the key elements of the strategy of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage to preserve the memory of soldiers and civilians who were killed, murdered, or died as a result of wars or their aftermath. The publication of this database will contribute to the dissemination of knowledge about Polish memorial sites beyond the borders of the Republic of Poland. This initiative complements the Ministry's ongoing efforts to maintain these sites in proper technical condition.

The database includes memorial sites dating back to the pre-partition period, graves of participants in the November and January Uprisings, and, most notably, graves, sections, and cemeteries related to Polish military actions and the martyrdom of Poles in the 20th century. Sites located in 58 countries have been inventoried, and the database is continuously updated.

Individual records provide the following information: the history and location of the site (city, administrative unit, GPS coordinates), as well as details regarding the construction of the memorial and any restoration work carried out. Photographic documentation of the burial sites is also included. The sources used to compile these records include physical inventories, archival documents, eyewitness accounts, and publications from various sources. The published records contain verified data while highlighting any discrepancies with the inscriptions found on the memorials.

The portal primarily presents information about lesser-known military cemeteries, sections, and graves, recognizing the fact that information about many of these sites has not been widely available. In the future, the most prominent and frequently visited Polish necropolises will also be added, along with sites already documented on various websites – including those managed by foreign institutions responsible for the maintenance of war graves.
